How To Stay On Budget When Traveling With Kids
Travelling with children can get very expensive if you do not have a plan and just go ahead with whatever is available. Fortunately, you can still take you children to places while not having to spend as much. Here are some tips and tricks you should consider.
Travel In The Off Season
There is a good reason why peak seasons are how they are and this is when plane tickets, hotels and almost everything you can connect with traveling hike their prices. A lot of times, this is when everybody traditionally heads to a destination, like some tropical island when it gets too cold or somewhere cool if the summer heat starts to get uncomfortable. You really can save a lot of money traveling in the off season and you can enjoy attractions better since there are fewer crowds.
Dealing with crowds can break your experience, and travelling to destinations where there’s too many people around can get tough if you are travelling with small kids. Going on off-peak season means that you and your family would no longer have to wait long lines or hop on a jam packed bus or train.
Book an Apartment Instead of a Hotel
A big chunk of the travelling budget always goes to accommodations and hotels are getting more and more expensive. They can cost you even more when traveling with family. Fortunately, renting apartments have now grown in popularity not only because these are more comfortable and flexible, but they also cost only a fraction of a hotel accommodation. When booking an apartment instead of a hotel, you are able to save on costs even during the peak seasons.
Most rented apartments even have their own kitchens, so you can save a lot by cooking for your kids instead of taking them out to eat at restaurants all the time. Another tip would be to book your accommodations as early as 3 to 5 months before because this can also lower the rates.
Plan Your Meals
Eating while traveling is a great way to enjoy a different settings and culture, but this can be quite expensive if you just go ahead and eat at whatever place you see. If you do not have a meal plan, you might just go ahead and order room service for the whole family. There is no problem if you are in for convenience, but this is not the way to go if you want to cut costs.
If your baggage still allows, it is easy to pack some basics such as cereal, peanut butter, crackers, noodles, coffee and tea. If not, you can pick them up on your way to your accommodation if it has a pantry. If there are restaurants that you would like to try, just be sure to keep the other meals as basic as you can.
Research On Free Activities
Not every tourist spot has to be paid for. In fact, majority of them are free. There is a common misconception that you would have to blow a lot of cash if you want your picture taken by popular tourist spots. The truth is you do not really have to spend a lot of money on activities. Just research your tentative location and, for sure, you will see a lot of free activities that would include popular landmarks, museums and festivals.
There are a lot of free museums in London and Paris, and most museums are free for children. Some even have child-oriented activities and audio guides that cost zero. If they do not happen to be free, another option would be to get a city pass or museum pass that would let you view numerous sites at a discounted rate.
Follow the Locals
Every popular destination has tourist traps where you spend a great deal of money and end up frustrated. This is because you might not have researched your destination well enough. Locals know your destination better than you ever will and they know where the best, cheapest and most enjoyable places in their own city are. You can enjoy fairs, shops, beaches and just do as the locals do since these are typically the cheapest. This might not be very comfortable for a visitor, but it offers a more immersive experience.
With these tips and tricks in mind, you surely would not have to break the bank to give your children an enjoyable and unforgettable travel experience. Do you know of any other tips for cutting costs while travelling with kids? Share with us your thoughts and experiences in the comments below!
