5 Most Expensive Wines In The World
There are a lot of things that mark how it is to be rich and famous. These can include expensive dinners, travels abroad, luxurious splurges and, of course, what they eat and drink. Wine is a very celebrated alcoholic beverage for the wealthy class, and this is why the price of such can soar to ridiculous heights. Here are some of the most expensive wines ever to exist.
Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1945
In 1997, a jeroboam of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, which is considered as one of the greatest vintages of the century, was sold to an anonymous bidder at an auction held at Christie’s, London. The wine was sold for $114,614 which means one bottle of this wine cost $23,000 per regular sized bottle.
The official website of the wine says that to celebrate the Allied victory and to mark his return, Baron Philippe asked the artist Philippe Julian to come up with the Mouton Rothschild label. This explains the “V” in the bottles which stands for Victory. The label for each item has since then been a reproduction of an original artwork that was created for Mouton by an artist.
Chateau Lafite 1787
This particular one holds the distinction of being the most expensive standard bottle of wine. In 1985, well renowned publisher Malcolm Forbes paid $160,000 for a bottle of a 1787 vintage. It was then believed to have come directly from President Thomas Jefferson’s cellar, as it had the initials ThJ engraved in the glass bottle. This has never been confirmed and its authenticity has been the subject of speculation and a debate that has been going on for years among experts.
Million Dollar Blog says that this bottle was the most expensive wine ever sold at one point. Thomas Jefferson bought this particular bottle of wine in France. It was not until 200 years later when it would be sold for such a price.
Chateau Margaux 1787
In contrast to the previous entry, this is the most expensive bottle of wine that was never sold. This also happens to be found from President Thomas Jefferson’s vintage collection. In 1989, this bottle was valued at a whopping $500,000 by its owner, a New York-based wine trader named William Sokolin. This ridiculously high price was the subject of debates back then and many took it to be a publicity stunt. However, the wine was never tested.
Sadly, when he took the wine to a Margaux dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel in New York, a waiter knocked the bottle over as the glass bottle shattered to pieces with the wine spilling all over. The value remains disputed, but insurers paid $225,000 for it.
Shipwrecked 1907 Heidsieck
This bottle holds the distinction of being the most expensive champagne in the world. Telegraph reports that way back in 1998 two thousand bottles of champagne were salvaged from a sunken ship, which were originally destined for the Imperial Court of Tsar Nicholas II. This ship was shot with a torpedo by a German submarine in World War I. When these bottles were gathered, they were sold at many different auctions all over the world as pieces of history.
Domaine Romanee-Conti 1999
The Malay Mail Online says that, just recently, a Jeroboam sized bottle of wine that came from the Burgundy estate sold for around $85,247 at a wines auction in Geneva, Switzerland. On June 6, 2017, the Domaine Romanee-Conti wine estate became the most talked about wine once again when a bottle of its 1999 vintage Romanee-Conti sold for such an amount.
Fine wine experts hold online wine auctions, which they call “Wine O’Clock,” regularly. The auction celebrated this well reputed 1,500-year-old wine estate which makes eight Grand Cr wines with 55 lots from the estate.
You might think of wine as something that goes well with steak, or with some fruits and cheese. However, serious wine collectors think of it as something else, especially if there is some history behind the bottle. Just like many other luxurious items, wines can get really pricey, as well.
